Digital is not dead, it’s big brother transformation has just joined the party

Firstly I’d like to get something off my chest…’digital’ is not dead and for those proclaiming it around the social channels I believe it’s only just got going.

Digital has just been fiddling around the edges until now and its taken a while.  In 1999 I was in the deserts of Australia with a satellite phone, digital camera, laptop and solar panel strapped to the back of a camel. This was digital then, we could still take pictures, write emails distributed to a global audience and post to our website off the back of a camel but that’s a story for another time!

Fast forward to today and we are all still producing and distributing content to a global audience via digital channels albeit not from the camel.  The difference recently is that transformation has joined the digital melee adding business objectives and customer needs which its been missing for a decade or more.

Combine the three and yes a huge amount of ‘big data’ is produced but finally the focus has and must return to the customer, not the technology. We still face hurdles of security concerns, sourcing the right technology partners, supporting those deployments and keeping pace with advancements, but with good strategy, process and buy in from the top these are all surmountable.  The customer will ultimately decide or not whether your transformational change has worked by how quickly you reach them, how you engage with them and how you service them.

This is not a new concept in itself but now with the right networks and technologies in place there should be no excuses for true digital transformation not to occur.
